Printable and Digital Insurance Cards: ID Cards on the Member Site

A key component of health insurance, ID cards serve as official proof of insurance that members should always carry with them. Firms must therefore make these cards readily available for members to view, print and save from their member sites. These functionalities become increasingly important for new members or when members move addresses or misplace their cards. This Healthcare Monitor Report evaluates the printable and digital insurance cards offered by our coverage firms on their member sites. We include firms that offer options to request ID cards via mail on their member and public sites.

We evaluate the desktop insurance cards for 12 of the 16 coverage group firms. Four firms do not offer ID cards on their member sites; two provide proof of insurance letters and two only offer the ability to request ID cards by mail. All ID cards inject modern touches, such as color logos and borders. Firms that stand out include optimized readability and use borders, good spacing and varied text sizes. In terms of card sharing options, firms have two standards: requesting a copy via mail and receiving cards by email or fax. No firms allow members to receive their cards via text message. Card data varies from plan to plan; however, best-in-class firms equip ID cards with as much relevant information for members and providers as possible.
